About Weaving Urban Fabric:

Flauschiger Beton und räumliche Verwebungen; durchzogen von Tagebucheinträge, Alltäglichkeiten und Erinnerungsversatzstücke. Eine wachsende Werkstattausstellung von Julia Brunner.

istanbul / berlin 2015-2022

the political and cultural repression after a prevented coup d´etat was all over the media when we received a six month travelling fellowship to istanbul. also being for the first time in a country with a muslim population majority, we were a bit hesitant if we could film and photograph everyone and everything – which is our way of working.

after a period of familiarisation we realize that our worries were idle. people are friendly and generally do not mind to be photographed. police forces are visible but not interested in us as long as we don´t film them. a vibrant street life makes the culture very approachable. the architecture and the urban planning are mirroring the political structure and changes in society. the speed and dimension of gentrification processes are insane. the public transport is partly happening by boat and allows incredible views on the city landscape. the hilly structure opens overall views to other neighbourhoods all the time. during our tours to far away outskirts we noticed how endless and culturally diverse istanbul is. it feels like a whole country condensed in a city space. we were amazed how safe and freely we could move around. another sensation are the cats who are all over the place. people build little houses in the streets and feed them.

we started to make friends and realized that our enthusiasm was very different to what people from istanbul felt. the art scene was struggling with repression and a lack of financial support. the government shut down bars and outside restaurants. licences to sell alcoholic beverages were retracted. the music and nightlife scene was suffering. many artists were actually leaving istanbul, many of them towards berlin. people who had a connection to the gülen movement lost their jobs or worse, they went to prison. the same could happen if one was associated to the gezi-park-protests – an incident that many remembered as the last time they had hope for a change to the better.

during the six month stay in istanbul we were caught between an atmosphere of declining social freedom and the exhilarating pulse of a dynamic metropolis in constant transformation. after lots of experimentation we found a way to edit the material that reflected our experience: 6 frames one shot, 6 frames another shot, 6 frames one shot, and so on – always combining two images into a flickering video stream – as if two contradictory minds are melting together inside your brain.

SOC.I.A and Ethingroom1 have been working as an artist duo for many years. In their common artistic practice, the individual positions blur, strengthen and expand. The result is an interweaving (exchange) that no longer focuses on the authorship of the individual, but on the shared artistic process and experience. The collaboration between the two teams multiplies the practices once again. This time, another person, Rixxa Wendland, joins the multi-layered version.

*EtchingRoom1* was founded in 2016 by the two graphic artists Kristina Yarosh and Anna Khodkova in Kyiv, Ukraine. The artists work in various techniques, including etching and drawing. Through keen observation, humor and an understanding of sharp sarcasm, Etchingroom1 work on graphic narratives about everyday situations that tell of an unstable, fragile and transient world in modern times.

*SOC.I.A* was founded in 2018 by Arthur and Igor Spaskyi in Kyiv, Ukraine. SOC.I.A’s practice focuses on finding a balance between spray culture, music and its representation in the gallery or street space. In their performance videos with self-composed music, they initiate the process of materialization of sound and give it a graphic form. The artists‘ bodies serve as conductors of the sound waves. In this meditative mode, they experience freedom and pleasure.

*Rixxa Wendland* is an art worker living in Berlin/Kreuzberg. Her drawings are structural fields of tension. The interweaving of multilayered – an uncovering of the surface through condensation. Intersection of lines, entanglement and open pores – tilting images that always also mark the negative space and thus remain ambiguous in their purpose.

Nan Hoover (* 12 May 1931 in Bay Shore, New York as Nancy Dodge Browne; † 9. June 2008 in Berlin as Nancy Hefti-Browne) belongs to the pioneers of international light, video and performance art. She also used the mediums of drawing, painting, photography and film and created art objects and sculptures. One of the main themes of her art was light and motion. The rigorous, minimalist handling of her means as well as the intense concentration with which she performed within spaces of light and shadow are the most salient characteristics of her artistic work. https://www.nanhooverfoundation.com/

Hanna Hartman
Having developed her very own language, the Swedish sound artist and composer Hanna Hartman creates compositions that are exclusively made up from authentic sounds which she has recorded around the world. Sounds are taken out of their original context and thus perceived in their purity. Hanna Hartman seeks to reveal hidden correspondences between the most diverse auditive impressions and in new constellations she creates extraordinary worlds of sound. http://www.hannahartman.de

Audrey Chen
Using the voice, cello and analog electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised, is completely un-processed and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of an analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language. For nearly two decades, her predominant focus has been her solo work with the voice, cello and electronics, but she has more recently, in the last four years, begun to shift back towards the exploration of the voice as a primary instrument. http://www.audreychen.com

Tara Transitory
aka One Man Nation makes work which some consider art, some consider music and some consider trash. Clearly, it never quite fits into demarcated categories. She is trans, nomadic and is exploring the intersections of gender, noise and ritual through sound, performance and the collective trance.
Currently, she has taken a hiatus from running the space e x t a n t a t i o n in Chiang Mai as well as her solo work. Instead she is focusing her energies on her collaboration with Nguyễn Baly as Nguyễn+Transitory, a living work which tries to explore touch, vulnerability, vibrations, frequencies, noise, rhythm and performance from a slightly less colonial, intersectional feminist angle as well as attempting to empirically learn more of the various Southeast Asian+diaspora queer existences and lost narratives.  Concurrently, she is working on the International //gender|o|noise\\ Underground, a collection of video documents made of ephemeral public interventions done in collaboration with other Asian trans* women such as Jenny Quỳnh Phương, Nguyễn Thiện Phúc and Kandy Zyanide (สุกุล ดงน้อย). http://onemannation.com/

Marie Menken (1910-1970) is the unsung heroine of the American avant-garde cinema. A mentor, muse and major influence for such key experimental filmmakers as Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol, Menken created an extraordinary body of exuberant and stunningly beautiful films shaped, above all, by her intuitive understanding of handheld cinematography and her background as painter. Bringing Menken works to Sentimental Punk represents the first full programme in collaboration with The Filmmakers Cooperative NY.

JD Zazie is an experimental DJ, avant-turntablist, sound artist and curator.
Coming from a DJ and a radiophonic background JD Zazie has explored different approaches to real-time manipulation of fixed recorded sound. In her work she redefines DJ and electroacoustic activities. As a solo performer, in small groups, and in large ensembles, she works in an area which is constantly stretching the borders of what could be defined as DJ mixing, free improvisation and composed music.

JD Zazie is a member of Reanimation Orchestra, is part of Hiccup (w/ Marina Cyrino, Tony Elieh, Matthias Koole) and plays regularly solo and duo with Heidrun Schramm. She is the art director of the MuseRuole – women in experimental music festival,  a member of the Burp Enterprise collective and broadcasts monthly on Colaboradio and on Reboot.fm.
She has participated in numerous exhibitions and events including SeaNaps festival (DE), Alternativa festival (CZ), Braille Satellite (LT), A L’Arme! festival (DE), Simultan festival (RU), Berlin Atonal (DE), All Ears (NO), Sonic Protest (FR), Heroines of Sound (DE), Reheat festival (AT), High Zero festival (US) https://jdzazie.tumblr.com/

Liz Kosack is a US born, Berlin-based synthesizer player and mask maker. With a unique voice on keyboards in improvised and experimental musics, she has been active internationally with a host of projects and musicians from the current contemporary improv scene, co-leading creative projects such as the Brooklyn-born VAX (Devin Gray, Patrick Breiner), The Hero of Warchester (Anna Webber, Nathaniel Morgan), and Berlin groups like The Liz (Korhan “Liz” Erel, Liz Allbee), **Y** (Dan Peter Sundland, Steve Heather), SPOILER (Julia Reidy, Sam Hall, Brad Henkel), Meow! (Cansu Tanrikulu, D.P.S., Jim Black), Powerboat (Farida Amadou, Dag Magnus Narvesen) KIM Collective, among many other collaborations and formations with a colorful scope of artists, often employing multidisciplinary craft with visuals and performative elements.

As a synthesizer player, she works to develop her instrument to the limits of its expressive potential. As a mask maker, her work seeks both to create and overcome issues of identity. Awarded the SWR Jazzpreis in 2019. http://zardkom.com

#Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist, sound artist and researcher currently based in Berlin. She works across the fields of improvisation, composition, instrument building and performative audio-visual installations. Her flute playing is characterized by singular techniques developed through the use of inside amplification. She explores subtle transformations of the air streams inside the flute’s tube and inside the flutist’s oral cavity, creating a constant kaleidoscopic movement of air-sounds shaped through unvoiced consonants, vowels and plosive sounds. The rhythmic use of the flute, the extensive use of objects and balloons attached to the instrument, and the use of disassembled flute parts are other striking elements of her playing. One of her main performative strategies is to play with flute stereotypes, revisiting and re(hear)sing Western flutist figures. By removing these figures from their original context and performing them in relation to the construction of Western modes of thinking, she experiment with playing-the-flute/ performing-the-flutist as a method for dismantling the different economies of an ‘universal’ narrative that imposes Western thinking as center of knowledges, languages and imaginations.

#Laura.aLL  the brazilian artist works and lives in Berlin and since 2004 she has been the guitarist of the band M.i.p.V _ Músicas intermináveis para Viagem (“Endless Music For Tripping”). She is an artist and researcher with a multidisciplinary background encompassing music and its relateds, performing arts, photography, video, chemistry and communication-journalism. Her work ranges from experimental art to ambient music, psychedelic rock, electroacoustic, noise and minimal.

#Roberta WJM Andreucci is a percussionist, an experimental producer and DJ, and on air personality. She has more than twenty year of experience organizing and promoting alternative music events. She practices plagiarism and the cutting and mixing of musical and ambiental aural sources. Early in her career she started focusing on the use of voices and on vocal metalinguism, focalizing on her personal practice of “cuttingandslicing” and on rhythm patterns obtained through an improper use of her tools of the trade (cdjs, cd player, md, me mixer). Through the years her percussion set morphed into a hybrid encompassing a dj booth, a radio dj one, a microphone station for electroacustic experiments, and a mnemonic butcher’s slab. She is a founding member of performing music units such as Jealousy Party, Semerssuaq, The Secretaries and Sistemi Audiofobici Burp. She is the director of the music label Burp Publications.

Dick returned to Ireland in 1982 and then to London in 1985, where she was a member of The London Filmmakers Coop for many years and produced a number of films in 16mm, and in video. She lives in Galway, Ireland, where she teaches and continues to make films.

# Anaïs Tuerlinckx is a pianist, composer and sound artist from Brussels. She moved to Berlin in 2008, interested in the local improvised music scene. Tending to a rather physical and expending way of playing, her performances are characterized by a decidedly harsh and noisy but at the same time elegiac, breezy and spacious sound.

# Florencia Curci is a sound & radio artist and curator based in Buenos Aires. Her work focuses on noise and rhythms as relative concepts that can configure perception, communication and subjectivity. Her interest is to open meeting spaces through sounding and listening.
Her work has been presented at Centro Cultural Kirchner, Cultural San Martín [AR], Medialab Prado [ES], Tsonami Festival[CL], Aural Festival [MX], Kunst Radio [AT] and Mayhem [DK], amongst others. # Tatiana Heuman works in the fields of sound, movement, and media arts. She is passionate about creating and maintaining spaces that facilitate the exchange of narratives and rituals, encouraging diversity, mutual care and the formation of bonds. To achieve this, she actively organizes labs and workshops that combine Deep Listening®, sound creation, dream sharing, and somatic movement practices.
Her musical journey began in 2009, playing trumpet and drums with the free improvisation band Ricarda Cometa. In 2014, Tatiana embarked on her solo electronic music project and released two EPs in 2014 and 2016. Her first album, ‚QEEI,‘ was released in 2018 under the label Astro Nautico. For more than three decades, filmmaker Dagie Brundert has been on the trail of chance, finding beauty in the banal and creating small works of wonder that celebrate this in a way that is as humorous as it is poetic. Her enthusiasm is for imperfect, impermanent, unfinished things and existences. And she captures these in her artistic universe: in experimental Super 8 film and in analog pinhole camera photography.
As a pioneer in the production of biological film developers, she creates unique effects with analog means that show a very unique, poetic approach to the world

has studied visual arts (sound installation, performance art) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, and singing at the University of California, San Diego. She tours the world as an improviser, she realises audiovisual voice performances / installations and compositions for soloists and ensembles. At the core of her research is an ongoing and uncompromised exploration of her voice. Ute creates imaginary acoustic habitats in which her chameleon-like voice is tuned in with composed or found soundscapes. Her methods to extend and alienate the voice include the use of bird whistles, lo-fi electronics, resonators, field recordings and different types of microphones. Her performances engage with everyday objects or self invented instruments for voice which can take shape as acoustic costumes.

# Mariana Carvalho
Between sound art, experimental music and performance art, Carvalho works with the body, interactions and limits between bodies, mostly through sound. Exploring internal listening, contact, distance and different ways of co-mingling through technological mediation. She uses voice, improvisation, hybrid compositional methods, self-built instruments, text, prepared piano, and different microphone and speaker arrangements involving transducers, binaural microphones, hydrophones and very small speakers. Carvalho creates relational devices for interaction and works transdisciplinary.

# Paula Sanchez
is a musician who works with sound and image, in the field of experimental music, improvisation and performance art. Taking body and materials to the limit, in the destruction,composition/decomposition of a mutable sound space In the pure presence of an embodied sound that invents relations as it makes its way into nothingness. She made her musical studies at the National University of San Juan in Argentina and a Masters in Performance specialized in Free Improvisation with Fred Frith and Alfred Zimmerlin at Musik Akademie of Basel, Switzerland 2018-2020.

#Corazón de Robota – Handcrafted love synths and electronic anarchy
Corazón de Robota (aka Constanza Piña) works in various fields including new media, dance, performance, focusing in DIY synthesizers, electronic textiles and wearable technology. She focuses on experimentation with electronic media, free technologies and DIWO methodologies (do it with others / let’s do it together). Her work explores noise as a sonorous, political and cultural phenomenon. She reflects on human/non-human technological assemblages and the role of machines in our culture, questioning academia, anthropocentrism, capitalism and techno-hetero-patriarchy as agents that oppose open knowledge and the valorization of manual technical work. https://corazonderobota.wordpress.com

#Teresa Riemann – Noise Drums & Vocals
Teresa Riemann is a multiinstrumentalist that started to learn the piano when she was 6 years old. She abandoned classical education at age 16 and started to explore different instruments on her own: guitar, cello and – since 2012 – the drums. Since then she has developed her very unique style of convulsive percussion meanwhile being fully conscious about every tone she plays and the precise moment it is going to break into being. She accompanies her drumming with the eclectic use of her fragmented voice, spontaneously reciting frazzles of the living memory of humankind. Apart from her solo projects on drums and piano, she plays in the groups Shake the Train and Naked in the Zoo. https://soundcloud.com/teresariemann/no-such-thing-like-home

Komm rHein

by Roya Noorinezhad

Time: 19:00

Exploring the intricacies of borders and the multifaceted concept of identity, this round discussion draws inspiration from the artist’s personal experiences as a migrant in Europe and U’s involvement on the Italian-French border. Additionally, U’s keen observations of the political situation in Iran have further fueled U’s artistic endeavors.

Residing in Basel, situated along the enchanting Rhein River, the artist’s motivation led to the inception of „komm rHein “ — a thought-provoking series aimed at illuminating the repetitive cycles that trap individuals within the confines of persistent border struggles. Through this round discussion, the artist embarks on a dialogue that seeks effective approaches and innovative forms of presentation, enabling a comprehensive exploration of diverse materials.

The round discussion and coming around with Roya showcases a compelling fusion of various artistic mediums, including photographs, videos, profound texts, geometric shapes, graphs. These elements have been meticulously collected from two distinct locations: the Rhein River Roya and the Roya River Valley.

Delving into the depths of history, the Rhein River Roya segment delves into the haunting tales of individuals who were unjustly labeled as witches and callously thrown into the depths of the Rhein River from the Mittlere Brücke in Basel. The artist, Roya, empathetically connects with these characters, further emphasizing the personal significance of this exploration as U navigates U’s own limitations in swimming ability.

Through this artistic exploration, the artist invites people to contemplate the complex interplay between borders, identity, and the human condition. By shining a light on these themes and intertwining personal experiences with historical narratives, it prompts reflection, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the profound struggles individuals face within the context of borders and society.

Attendees are encouraged to immerse themselves in this captivating journey, to engage with the artworks, and to become part of a larger conversation that transcends geographical boundaries, fostering unity and fostering an appreciation for the intricate tapestry of human experiences.

Thank you for joining us on this transformative artistic exploration.

03/12/2022_18:00-18:30 I am not West, I am not east
Performance by Sevgi Aka

03/12/2022_18:00-18:30

I am not West, I am not east

Performance by Sevgi Aka

I am not west, I am not east is performed as a response to the 350m square area legally Eastern property, which remained enclosed in the West in Bethaniendamm, Kreuzberg. This piece of land was squatted by a Turkish migrant Osman Kalın who used it agriculturally and built a gecekondu. This space offers a new look at the „wall as potential” as a testimony to the former division.

The performance deals with the inability of the relocated individuals to fully fit in one culture, trying to sustain double lives, meanwhile trying to figure out who they are in the cross sections between these two locations. The work also recalls the blind spots between who we think we are and who we truly are and the aspects of the personality that we reject, and push down into our unconscious psyches. Beneath that conscious “light” lies a whole world of “darkness”, the secret piece of the personality is the shadow self, containing those very aspects of ourselves that we have strived to ignore.

ESRA AKCAN / OPEN ARCHITECTURE

A Discussion on Open Architecture and Reparations

This workshop is meant to generate a discussion on monumentality and reparations by jumping off from Esra Akcan’s book Open Architecture: Migration, Citizenship and the Urban Renewal of Berlin Kreuzberg by IBA’1984/87.

This book  defines open architecture as the translation of a new ethic of welcoming into the design process. It exemplifies formal, programmatic and procedural steps towards open architecture during the urban renewal of Berlin’s Kreuzberg, by giving voice not only to the established and understudied architects who were invited to build public housing here, but also to noncitizen residents.

_ _ _ _ _
Esra Akcan is Michael A. McCarthy Professor of Architectural Theory in the Department of Architecture, and Resident Director of the  Institute for Comparative Modernities at Cornell University. Esra Akcan’s research on modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism foregrounds the intertwined histories of Europe, West Asia and East Africa, and offers new ways to understand architecture’s role in global, social and environmental justice. She has written extensively on critical and postcolonial theory, racism, immigration, architectural photography, translation, neoliberalism, and global history.

Anti-Spatial

Interactive Installation by Rahul Sharma

(Curated by Shokoufeh Eftekhar)

Kotti-Shop: 20:00-23:00

When we talk about a city space and the experience of a human in that context, it is not only mediated by the city streets, the parks, playgrounds, the transport stations, the common service areas, and the cultural city centers, there are different media attentions and applications that come into focus, the use of smartphones or smart devices in such places plays an important role in how a person perceives a space. This project explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world by collecting data from the Twitter API in real-time and investigating how data from a place can reflect and define its urban narrative.

Anti-Spatial is an interactive installation where the visitor can move through a representation of a city constituted of computer-generated, three-dimensional point data. The interface gives the viewer interactive control over the direction and speed of the travel. The physical effort of moving in the real world is gratuitously transposed into a virtual environment, creating kinesthetic conjunction of the active body in the virtual domain.

PERFECT IMMORTAL MACHINE_Record Release from Valentina Berthelon

_The album was recorded by Valentina at her home studio in Berlin and mixed at Non Standard Studios by Tobias Freund.

PERFECT IMMORTAL MACHINE

S/he is a glitch of the neoliberal era of information, a hybrid body
that enjoys the blurring of boundaries, the opportunity to shape
identities in new ways and to form alliances.
S/he is an upgrade or enhancement of possibilities, a new body
condition of total fluidity and porosity, pure flexibility.
For such a body it makes no difference on which side of the system
it is positioned.
S/he is a user and a system operator at the same time, a timeless
space, a vastness like a Matrix and a place of resistance.
S/he refuses to be categorized and demands.
Her/his right to range, experiment and try on different selves.

Valentina Berthelon, known for her visual work as a media artist on projects like Recent Arts produced her first full-length album. Expressing herself as a sound artist is a new territory for Valentina. Her experience as a DJ gave her a special kind of rhythmical understanding but her love of experimental music led her to this production of vocal collages combined with a rhythm corset and harmonic layers.

ZS ZS live performances are about exploring and merging harsh, rhythmical and atmospheric soundscapes together with text and field recordings within a dramaturgical concept. END OF STORY live #003: Novo Line + Estelle Quarino

For Kotti-Shop, Novo Line(Berlin) and performer/visual artist Estelle Quarino (Geneva) present a sound-movement collaboration, uniting the Novo Line Prime* project with Quarino’s own sound-movement persona**
Piezo sensors within a bespoke latex bodysuit are manipulated by Quarino’s movements and transformed immediately to MIDI information in the Novo Line universe; transposed, transformed, and recapitulated with live effects. This feedback loop creates a living circuit connecting movement and sound, fostering an environment of indirect control of each performer’s own intuited process.

*Novo Line Prime is a performatory experiment exploring the extinct art of cassette tape-sync, allowing pre-recorded sounds to sync with live instrumentation. The recordings allow the classic Novo Line studio sounds and a more varied complexity to be delivered on 2- and 4-track cassette via tape collage. The approach shares the obtuse poly-ostinato and intuitive unplanned ethos of our pre-pandemic world Novo Line with a new sensitivity, directed towards saturated textures, ambient feelings, and aperitivi.

**Estelle Quarino, perfomer / visuel artist / special effect makeup artist and props maker for film and theater –  Explores the creative process using different artistic disciplines with the aim of assembling various project perspectives related to the body in space, inspired by different dance techniques such as butoh and classical dance allowing to incorporate strange gesture, sculptural material, sound, texture, sensory and emotions.

EndOfStory: Logs #1

Date: 26+27/06/21_21:30h

In order to celebrate our first release on end of story we are pleasedto have logs playing @kotti-shop from their studio in moscow on saturday. Expect an intimate live improvisation set accompanied by beautiful collages provided by Yuri Gohubev. All this will be presented in the Kotti-shop window starting at 21:30h.

Logs is a free improvisation band from moscow founded by daria zvezdina and andrey guryanov in 2019. Logs is a self-evolving multilayered situationgrounded in music but also incorporating other forms of expression. Their first album ‘Eight’ was created by editing, trimming and juxtaposing two improvised live sets. It mimics a pop album with its narrative structure and focus on songs while preserving logs original musical language. Vocal pieces were initially embroidered in the raw feedof the livesets and then excavated from them. Still they appear on the album on their own as its translation and consequence.

Logs – eight is now available as download, cassette or limited edition USB-Sculpture here:

This is an open air event open to everyone. Please follow all the necessary pandemic precautions, you know the drill…
